Supporting Innovation in Lung Cancer Diagnosis at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital
On behalf of the Keith Jones Foundation, Tevir Group was delighted to present a donation of £79,640 to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), funding a pioneering new diagnostic innovation that will help patients being investigated for suspected lung cancer receive faster answers and reduce the need for repeat procedures.
Each year, thousands of patients attend LHCH for specialist investigations during what can be an understandably anxious and uncertain time. One of the key diagnostic procedures used is Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), which enables clinicians to take biopsy samples from the lungs and surrounding lymph nodes.
While EBUS is highly effective, up to 20% of procedures nationally do not obtain sufficient diagnostic material, meaning some patients need to return for a second procedure and face further delays while waiting for a diagnosis.
Thanks to funding from the Keith Jones Foundation, LHCH has introduced Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE), becoming the first hospital in the UK to incorporate this innovation into its EBUS diagnostic pathway.
ROSE allows biopsy samples to be assessed immediately by an expert pathologist while the procedure is taking place. Clinicians can confirm there and then whether enough diagnostic material has been collected, significantly reducing the likelihood of repeat procedures.
For patients, this means:
Faster diagnosis
Fewer repeat invasive procedures
Reduced uncertainty and waiting times
An improved overall patient experience
The equipment funded by the Foundation is now being installed at LHCH and will soon be in clinical use.
Dr Emily Hoodless, Respiratory Consultant at LHCH, said:
"We are thrilled to be the first hospital in the UK to offer this pioneering innovation for our patients. It has the potential to make a real difference for people waiting for answers. We are incredibly grateful to the Keith Jones Foundation for making this possible."
Ciaran Doherty Managing Director at Tevir Group, said:
"Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital holds a special place in the Foundation's heart, and we are delighted to support this important project. It is a privilege to help fund technology that will provide faster answers and reduce the need for repeat procedures."
This project reflects the Foundation's commitment to supporting healthcare innovation that improves patient outcomes and experiences. To find out more about LHCH, you can visit their website here
